The Story of the Christmas Gonk - how they arrived in our homes and our hearts ♥️

Growing up gonks were a bit of a thing in our house….I remember my mum handing me my first one…all googly eyes and fur everywhere….. I’m not going to lie, he wasn’t the most attractive fellow, but endearing all the same. I loved him and have had a love of gonks ever since.

Fast forward a few hundred years (well actually 30 or so) and gonks have exploded on the Christmas Scene. They are a now a firm favourite in our homes for the festive season.

However, they’ve changed somewhat from the 80’s, with their hats pulled over their eyes and long bushy beards, very much taking inspiration from the Scandinavian gnomes and goblins in Nordic mythology. The story goes that these short tubby guys would make their home in houses or barns. If the family they chose to live with were good and kind people, the gonks would bring magic, good fortune and protect the family and their land. However, if the family did not take care of their land and were disrespectful, this would anger them and they would become naughty and mischievous, wreaking havoc and playing tricks on the humans.

During the winter solstice, the old Nordic tradition involved leaving a bowl of warm porridge out so that the gonks could feast and join the festivities. As Christmas became more prominent cross Scandinavia, the tradition of the gonks remained and so now they are synonymous with this time of year.

And so, I think we should all have our own special gonk bringing festive cheer to our homes at Christmas. Here at Collecting Seashells we have a stunning range of all colours and sizes to choose from. Standing, Sitting, Bobbin, Doorstop, Large, Small, Light up noses and dangly legs… you name it we have them, all waiting to go to their forever homes.
